A third painting done late in 1991 was never completed and was subsequently painted over. Fortunately a black and white photo of it exists which shows an uncanny glimpse of the narrative’s future development. The building here in the background could easily have been the “Classical Studies Building” from book two.

In issue #10 of works & conversations, Harrison talks about how the animal figure became Indigo Animal and left the canvas to enter the world of cartoon narrative with pencil and ink drawings, the first of which appeared in issue #2 of the arts magazine The Secret Alameda.

Seven episodes of Indigo Animal appeared in The Secret Alameda between 1991 and 1998. In 1999, Harrison’s first book Indigo Animal was published. A third volume awaits for the resolution of this stage of Indigo’s story.
